Saint Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

August 28

Augustine was born in 354 in Thagaste, Roman North Africa. Brilliant, ambitious, and restless, he studied rhetoric, embraced Manichaeism, pursued worldly success, and searched for truth across philosophy and religion. In Milan, under the preaching of Saint Ambrose and the prayers of Monica, he was baptized at Easter in 387.

Augustine became priest and then Bishop of Hippo in 395, serving during the decline of Roman power in the West and the sack of Rome in 410. His works, including Confessions, City of God, and On the Trinity, shaped Christian theology for centuries. He died in 430 while Vandals besieged Hippo. His feast speaks to every restless heart seeking truth, mercy, and peace in God.

Prayer: Saint Augustine, pray that our restless hearts may find peace in God alone. Amen.
