Saint Gregory the Great, Pope, and Doctor of the Church
Gregory was born around 540 into a noble Roman family after the Western Empire had fallen and Italy had been devastated by war, plague, and instability. He served as prefect of Rome before becoming a monk, then papal ambassador in Constantinople. Elected pope in 590, he led the Church through famine, Lombard threats, and fragile civil order.
Gregory strengthened pastoral administration, wrote the Pastoral Rule, promoted liturgical life, and sent Augustine of Canterbury to evangelize the Anglo-Saxons in 597. He called himself “servant of the servants of God,” a title still used by popes. His feast honors leadership rooted in humility, prayer, mission, and care for the vulnerable.
Prayer: Saint Gregory the Great, pray for Church leaders, teachers, missionaries, and all who serve God’s people. Amen.
