On Saturday, November 25, Serra Club members Beth Payne, Louis Hillenmeyer, and Jim Bryant, along with Erin Dubravcak (Jim Bryant’s daughter) went on a fun trip to Holy Trinity Church in Harlan, Kentucky, to hang out with Fr. Terrence and all his parishioners.
Fr. Terrence planned this day to have gifts and clothing for the children, and we wanted it to be a big turnout. We loaded our truck down with all the fixin’s to feed over a hundred people and headed out. We arrived at 2:30 in the afternoon to an absolutely perfect sunny and warm 60 degrees.
On the way, approximately eight miles from Holy Trinity, we found out just how much Fr. Terrance is loved and known in Harlan. I was pulled over for speeding – the state trooper said I was going 70 in a 55mph zone. When I told him we were on our way to feed 100 people for Fr. Terrence at Holy Trinity, the state trooper handed me my license, thanked us for what we were doing and said to slow down. I told Fr. Terrence about our little traffic incident, and he knew exactly who the state trooper was because of the recent stops he encountered with the same officer.
Parishioners Michael and Shawna were there to greet and help us in preparing all the food. Fr. Terrence had two Blackstone Grills ready and waiting. The menu was a mix of breakfast and dinner, so we cooked fried potatoes, hot dogs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, breakfast sausage, and pancakes. We had a giant salad, pimiento cheese and crackers, juice boxes, soft drinks, milk, tea, and water. For dessert there was cheesecake and all kinds of cookies.
We all had a blessed day and cautiously made it home without any more run-ins with the law.
