SNAP Benefits Statement

Dear Friends in Christ,

As most of us have heard, with the current government shutdown, SNAP benefits are not scheduled to be available as of November 1st. This shutdown affects 600,000 children, Seniors, and working families throughout Kentucky who will not be receiving their food subsidies. Food pantry programs are expected to be inundated with many who fear going hungry this month. Pope Leo stated in his recent exhortation, Dilexi Te:

“In hearing the cry of the poor, we are asked to enter into the heart of God, who is always concerned for the needs of his children, especially those in greatest need… The condition of the poor is a cry that, throughout human history, constantly challenges our lives, societies, political and economic systems, and, not least, the Church” (8-9).

We can make a difference in our community. Please encourage your people to give either materially with non-perishable food, or monetarily. People want to help, they just need to know how or where. I have already received multiple calls in Campton from long-time donors, worried about our clients, wishing to share their resources.

The document Dilexi Te goes on:

“Christians must not abandon almsgiving. It can be done in different ways, and surely more effectively, but it must continue to be done. It is always better at least to do something rather than nothing” (119).

I have attached an image for social media sharing or feel free to use anything from this message to get the word out to our people of the great need that is forthcoming for all who distribute and receive food. Pope Leo reminds us in his exhortation, “Communion is the church’s vocation”.

With peace in Christ,
