St. Ignatius of Antioch

October 17

Ignatius was a bishop of Antioch in the early second century. His birth and early life are poorly documented. What is well known comes chiefly from letters written while he was being taken under guard to Rome, where he expected to be executed.

Those letters urge Christian communities to remain united, care for their bishops and hold firmly to the reality of Christ’s life, suffering and resurrection. They also reveal Ignatius’ longing to remain faithful under threat. He was martyred in Rome, traditionally around 107, although the precise year is uncertain.

His October 17 memorial is rooted in ancient Christian remembrance; its first assigning decree is unknown. Ignatius’ writing makes the day particularly relevant to prayer for unity within parishes and the wider Church. St. Ignatius of Antioch, pray for us!
