Saint Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr

August 10

Lawrence was one of the seven deacons of Rome in the third century, serving under Pope Sixtus II. Deacons were entrusted with liturgical service and care for the poor. During Emperor Valerian’s persecution in 258, Christian leaders were targeted, and Lawrence was ordered to hand over the Church’s treasures.

According to ancient tradition, Lawrence presented the poor, sick, and vulnerable as the true treasure of the Church. He was martyred shortly after Sixtus II, likely on August 10, 258, and became one of Rome’s most beloved saints. His feast reminds us that the Church’s riches are not possessions, but the people Christ loves, especially the poor.

Prayer: Saint Lawrence, help us recognize Christ in the poor and serve with courage, joy, and sacrifice. Amen.
