Divine Mercy Sunday
Divine Mercy Sunday is a feast established by Pope John Paul II and celebrated on the Sunday after Easter. It honors the merciful love of God revealed through Jesus Christ, emphasizing forgiveness, trust, and compassion. The feast is rooted in the visions of St. Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun who received private revelations from Jesus in the 1930s. Jesus asked her to promote a devotion to His Divine Mercy, promising that “the soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment” (Diary of St. Faustina, 699).
Divine Mercy Sunday invites the faithful to celebrate God’s infinite mercy through prayer, the sacraments, and acts of charity. Central to the devotion is the image of Jesus with rays of red and pale light streaming from His heart, symbolizing the blood and water poured out for humanity. The Church encourages confession, Eucharist, and veneration of the image to grow in trust in God’s mercy and to extend mercy to others in daily life. This feast is a reminder that no one is beyond God’s love and that all are called to live in forgiveness, compassion, and hope.
