Saint Monica
Monica was born around 331 in Thagaste, in Roman North Africa, present-day Algeria. Married to Patricius, she lived within a mixed household and became known for perseverance, patience, and prayer. Her son Augustine wandered intellectually and morally through Manichaeism, ambition, and restlessness before his conversion.
Monica followed Augustine to Italy and was present near the time of his baptism by Saint Ambrose in Milan in 387. She died later that year at Ostia, near Rome, after a profound spiritual conversation with Augustine described in his Confessions. Her feast comforts parents and loved ones who pray over long years, trusting that grace works even when conversion is slow.
Prayer: Saint Monica, pray for parents, families, and all who wait in hope for loved ones to return to God. Amen.
