Saint Pius X, Pope
Giuseppe Sarto was born in 1835 in Riese, in the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, to a humble family. After serving as parish priest, bishop, patriarch of Venice, and eventually pope from 1903 to 1914, he became known as Pius X. His pontificate unfolded in the early 20th century, amid modernist controversies, social change, and renewed attention to liturgy and catechesis.
Pius X encouraged frequent Communion, lowered the age for First Communion, promoted Gregorian chant, reformed canon law, and emphasized clear teaching of the faith. He died in 1914, shortly after the outbreak of World War I, and was canonized in 1954. His motto, “to restore all things in Christ,” still summarizes his pastoral vision.
Prayer: Saint Pius X, help us love the Eucharist, guard the faith, and renew our lives in Christ. Amen.
