Saint James, Apostle

July 25

James, son of Zebedee and brother of John, was a fisherman from Galilee called by Jesus near the Sea of Galilee. Along with Peter and John, he belonged to the inner circle that witnessed moments such as the Transfiguration and the agony in Gethsemane. His mother’s request for honor in Matthew 20 reveals the apostles’ need to learn that glory in Christ comes through service and suffering.

Acts 12 records that James was killed by order of King Herod Agrippa I, probably around 44 A.D., making him the first of the apostles to be martyred. Later tradition connected him with Spain and the pilgrimage shrine of Santiago de Compostela, one of medieval Europe’s great pilgrimage destinations. His feast reminds us that apostolic zeal is measured not by ambition, but by self-giving witness.

Prayer: Saint James the Apostle, help us follow Christ with courage, serve humbly, and witness faithfully. Amen.
