Calvary provides cremation. However, there are several regulations that we must abide in accordance with Canon Law for the sanctity and respect of burial rights:

The Basic requirement for showing respect to the ashes of the deceased is that “be laid to rest in a sacred place” (no.5). They may not be kept permanently at home or divided among various family members (no.6). They may not be scattered “in the air, on land, at sea or in some other way” (no.7). They may not be carried around encased in jewelry or other mementos (no.7) They must be put in a sacred place, usually a cemetery, though it could possibly be a church or some other area that has been “set aside for this purpose, and so dedicated by the competent ecclesial authority” (no.5).

– 2016 Instruction from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Ad Resurgendum cum Christo

In December 2021, a columbarium was installed at Calvary Cemetery to accommodate the interment of cremated remains. Bishop John Stowe, OFM Conv., blessed the 144 niches of the columbarium on November 6, 2022, naming the section after Saint Gertrude the Great, who is often invoked for the souls in Purgatory. In certain circumstances, with the permission of both the cemetery and the owner of a ground burial right, a burial plot is available to select. Please call or fill out the form below to learn more about our options for a cremated service.
