Present: Becky Estep, Cara Johnson, John Larmour, Carolyn Large, Lee McGrath, John Mitchell; special guest, Dcn. Tim Weinmann
Meeting opened with Scripture and New Evangelization Prayer. Lee introduced Dcn Tim who gave a presentation on Catholics Returning Home, a parish ministry of compassion and reconciliation. Dcn Tim gave the history of the program and shared some statistics: those leaving the Church outnumber those joining the Church, 23% of Catholics attend Mass weekly; Catholicism has lost more people to other religions or to no religion than any other religious group; most former Catholics say the primary reason they left was that they “gradually drifted” away.
CRH is a 6-week program. It is designed to be low-budget, easy, and effective. The purpose is not to teach but to build relationships and trust and a sense of belonging. It requires a small team of people (3-6 members) who are capable of providing a supportive, non-judgmental environment for the returning Catholic to re-enter the life of the Church. The team is called to accept people where they are, be good listeners and resist the initial response to defend the faith. Dcn Tim left us with handouts and CDs containing CRH Resources. He addressed our questions about the program, team and effectiveness.
Dcn. Tim left after his presentation and attending members shared their thoughts. Responses included: 1) impressed with the program and liked the idea of alternating with CTK; 2) MQ is a large enough parish to have their own program. Just about everyone knew someone who has left MQ. 3) Relationships and trust may be best achieved for those returning to MQ if journeying with parishioners of MQ. There is merit in being welcomed by the people you will see on a regular basis, worship with and break bread with. Personal contact with MQ parishioners living their faith is important. 4) Providing a non-judgmental environment is essential.
Group shared personal stories of evangelization over the Christmas season. Lee asked everyone to pray about CRH and communicate any questions or suggestions before the next meeting. Petitions were offered and the meeting closed with prayer.
