Continuing Education for Liturgical committee 2014:
Goals:
We, with Fr. Dan, are responsible for fostering good worship at Mary Queen by:
Establishing short and long range goals for the liturgical life of MQ based on Church documents
Planning and preparing Eucharistic liturgies and other celebrations
Establishing parish policies concerning various rites and liturgical questions
Scheduling and training liturgical ministers
Providing ongoing liturgical formation of committee members and parishioners in order to promote full, conscious and active participation of the faithful
Evaluating on a regulate basis all of the above
Committee will review efforts to affirm our successes towards accomplishing these goals and with intent to improve for next year. Topics for discussion include: Environment – Introductory Rites – Music – Sound System – Liturgical ministers – Attendance – Hispanic community - Mass times (Vigil at 4 and Holy Day at 10).
Old Business:
Advent Masses and season
Special Masses and Celebration schedule. Consensus was group loved the singing, extra verses of O Come O Emanuel. Difficulties with lighting of wrong candles at services. Questions about whether a white candle is appropriate for use in wreath.
Next year--Order extra candles, taller
Revisit next year--- question of a white candle on the wreath.
Our Lady of Guadalupe Celebration and Masses
Display becoming larger, more people involved. Members expressed appreciation how well organized. Mass at 7 pm well attended. Comments that the morning Mass was especially beautiful. Procession from Ball Park in the evening was well attended
Christmas Season--Beautiful environment, Banners wonderful; Poinsettias died quickly over season-- ½ donated by one parishioner, ½ ordered.
Next year may try to bring in new ones ½ way thru season.
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Masses
Mass at 4pm packed---+100 white chairs vestibule (approx900+) Choir room full, approx. 40 parents with children; 6 pm Mass full, approx 60-70 kids came to steps on priest invitation;07:30 full; Midnight services Beautiful.
Revisit next year question of whether should add extra Mass, 3 pm Mass
Possibly use TV in gathering area to broadcast service for those in vestibule, revisit next year
Chairs in gathering area need missals or songs sheets.
How do we explain to visitors about use of baskets at the pew ends, used for collections …?
Revisit question next meeting
To make the flow of the collection smoother, suggested that the gifts be brought up prior to the collection. Servers would set up altar and gifts be brought up prior to collection.
Implement. Details to be worked out with those involved, including ushers. Possibly begin March 1.
Mary, the Holy Mother of God—no new input.
Christmas Day-- Approx 400 at 10am
Jan 1--10 am Mass good turnout. Vigil also had more people.
Epiphany---Jan 6—several people commented they loved candles in windows. Enjoyed children that visited crib after mass, upon invitation by Father.
NEW BUSINESS
Feb 2nd—Presenataion of the Lord. Candle Mass and scout Sunday same weekend. Noted that parishioners not informed about candle mass. Discussion about use of candles at service; whether parishioners would bring candles from home; Benedictus could sell candles week before; Our church could possibly provide. Father noted intent not really about personal candles
Fr. to include information in his weekly bulletin letter
Priest to bless candles at beginning of Mass
For all masses, have a candle procession with a representative group of parishioners
Baskets of candles (candles with bobeche holders provided by church) to be available before mass. Ushers to assist with distribution.
People may bring their own candles.
Topics to be addressed—making candles available; prompt lighting; music while candles being lite; extinguishing; fire safety, extinguishers; coordinators at each mass. Committee: Bill, Karen, Lisa, Michelle, Father Dan.
Feast St blasé, Feb. 3, Monday---Blessing of throats,
Invite parishioners to come forward after mass. EM can bless. Jenna to have candles with appropriate prayer attached for EM.
Ash Wed, 3-5
Same committee as last year. Bill to send out notice.
Bilingual for Triduum--- low participation last year and we will not have a bilingual Triduum this year. Therefore, we may not need a worship aid! Discussed that Spanish parishioners requesting possible Spanish mass on Holy Thursday. It was noted that they probably prefer later services. Fr. Dan questioned how the repose of the Blessed Sacrament would be addressed if 2 Masses were done.
Consider separate Spanish service next year. We will have 2 separate Holy Thursday masses this year -- the first in English (5:30pm?); the second in Spanish
Easter Vigil—Cara requested the committee review the possibility of reducing the length of time of the Easter Vigil (currently 3 hr long,) considering the impact on attendance. Discussion included: the number of readings; possibly start earlier, 8:30 or 8:45 (Father noted should start after nautical darkness) current practice of alternating Spanish and English reading.; possible Spanish service. Bishop gainer initially began the practice of having 7 readings; commented that lectures hesitate to sign up for vigil, possibly because of #readings.
Suggestions to keep 3 OT readings, consider not having responsorial psalms after each reading. Committee to work thru details
Deacon monthly blessing after mass .
Deacons will discuss details to implement, continue.
Rebuilt book read by most committee members--one suggestion was for a “homily series” to build 3-4 consecutive weeks with the same theme, same deacon to give all homilies, for consistency. Goal of ongoing improvement in effort to change lives and draw parishioners back. Group discussed several question’s---tying gospel to theme may be a challenge; each priest/deacon brings different gifts to a homily on the theme; our parish is unique in we have so many homilist available to us; season’s have their own themes.
Committee to revisit
Theme idea suggestion:—Seek the lost; Where is the parish heading? Are we singular individuals moving forward.
