SUMMARY:St. Martin I
DESCRIPTION:St. Martin I was born around 590 and became pope in 649 during a time of great turmoil in the Church. He courageously defended the true teaching of the Church against the heresy of Monothelitism\, which falsely claimed that Christ had only one divine will rather than both a human and divine will. Pope Martin spoke clearly and boldly against this error\, emphasizing the fullness of Christ’s humanity and divinity. His steadfast defense of orthodoxy angered the Byzantine emperor\, who had promoted the heresy\, leading to Martin’s arrest. \nHe was brutally tried\, imprisoned\, and exiled to Cherson in the Crimea\, enduring harsh conditions for nearly two years. Despite suffering and isolation\, Martin never wavered in faith\, offering comfort and spiritual guidance to fellow captives. He died in exile in 655\, recognized by the Church as a martyr for the faith. Martin I is remembered as a model of courage\, fidelity\, and unwavering commitment to the truth of the Gospel\, even in the face of persecution.
