SUMMARY:St. Ignatius of Antioch
DESCRIPTION:Ignatius was a bishop of Antioch in the early second century. His birth and early life are poorly documented. What is well known comes chiefly from letters written while he was being taken under guard to Rome\, where he expected to be executed. \nThose letters urge Christian communities to remain united\, care for their bishops and hold firmly to the reality of Christ’s life\, suffering and resurrection. They also reveal Ignatius’ longing to remain faithful under threat. He was martyred in Rome\, traditionally around 107\, although the precise year is uncertain. \nHis October 17 memorial is rooted in ancient Christian remembrance; its first assigning decree is unknown. Ignatius’ writing makes the day particularly relevant to prayer for unity within parishes and the wider Church. St. Ignatius of Antioch\, pray for us!

SUMMARY:Saints John de Brébeuf\, Isaac Jogues and Companions
DESCRIPTION:John de Brébeuf was born in France in 1593 and Isaac Jogues in 1607. Both entered the Jesuits and went to North America. Brébeuf spent years among the Wendat\, learning their language; Jogues served in the same broad mission region. Their companions included other missionaries and lay workers. \nThe missions unfolded amid disease\, colonial expansion\, shifting alliances and warfare. Jogues was captured\, escaped\, returned and was killed in 1646. Brébeuf was killed in 1649. Their courage is part of the story; so is the need to tell the history of Indigenous communities with care rather than treating them as scenery in a missionary account. \nOctober 19 is their memorial in the U.S. calendar. Their witness is associated with prayer for missionaries and the Church in North America. A responsible remembrance can pray both for faithful service today and for truth and healing in relationships shaped by colonial history. Saints John de Brébeuf\, Isaac Jogues and Companions\, pray for us!

SUMMARY:Screening of The Seeds of Peace
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, October 20\, 7:15\, the Diocese of Lexington is sponsoring  a screening of  “The Seeds of Peace” at the Kentucky Theatre. The film tells the story of Hideko Tamura Snider\, a survivor of the Hiroshima atomic bombing who later settled in Oregon. Through her Seeds of Peace initiative\, seedlings propagated from trees that survived the Hiroshima bombing have been planted in communities across Oregon as symbols of hope\, resilience\, and peace. We are exploring the possibility of bringing one of these seedlings to Lexington and hope our city can become a “Seeds of Peace” community.  \nFilm Trailer: https://vimeo.com/863444561?fl=pl&fe=sh

SUMMARY:St. John Paul II
DESCRIPTION:Karol Wojtyła was born in 1920 in Wadowice\, Poland. He lost his mother\, brother and father while still young. During Nazi occupation he worked and pursued clandestine studies for the priesthood; under Communist rule he served as a priest and then bishop. \nElected pope in 1978\, he traveled extensively\, addressed human dignity and religious freedom\, and began World Youth Day. He survived an assassination attempt in 1981\, later meeting the man who shot him. In his final years\, illness visibly limited him. He died on April 2\, 2005. \nHis optional memorial is October 22\, the anniversary of the inauguration of his papal ministry. He is often invoked by young people and families. His day lends itself to prayer for people carrying illness in public view\, as well as for leaders whose decisions affect human dignity. St. John Paul II\, pray for us!

SUMMARY:All Saints Day
DESCRIPTION:All Saints has no single birth-to-death biography. It celebrates those who have reached communion with God: canonized saints\, lesser-known Christians and people whose holiness was known only to those near them or to God. The Church’s remembrance of martyrs eventually broadened into a celebration of all the saints. \nIn 2026 the solemnity falls on Sunday. Its Gospel is the Beatitudes in Matthew 5. Jesus calls the poor in spirit\, the merciful\, the peacemakers and those who suffer for righteousness blessed; the passage portrays holiness through dependence on God and love of neighbor rather than public achievement. \nNovember 1 has been observed for many centuries; its history developed gradually\, not through one modern decree. The Litany of the Saints\, with its repeated petitions for the saints’ prayers\, is especially fitting. All Saints\, pray for us!
