SUMMARY:Saint Augustine\, Bishop and Doctor of the Church
DESCRIPTION:Augustine was born in 354 in Thagaste\, Roman North Africa. Brilliant\, ambitious\, and restless\, he studied rhetoric\, embraced Manichaeism\, pursued worldly success\, and searched for truth across philosophy and religion. In Milan\, under the preaching of Saint Ambrose and the prayers of Monica\, he was baptized at Easter in 387. \nAugustine became priest and then Bishop of Hippo in 395\, serving during the decline of Roman power in the West and the sack of Rome in 410. His works\, including Confessions\, City of God\, and On the Trinity\, shaped Christian theology for centuries. He died in 430 while Vandals besieged Hippo. His feast speaks to every restless heart seeking truth\, mercy\, and peace in God. \nPrayer: Saint Augustine\, pray that our restless hearts may find peace in God alone. Amen.

SUMMARY:Saint Gregory the Great\, Pope\, and Doctor of the Church
DESCRIPTION:Gregory was born around 540 into a noble Roman family after the Western Empire had fallen and Italy had been devastated by war\, plague\, and instability. He served as prefect of Rome before becoming a monk\, then papal ambassador in Constantinople. Elected pope in 590\, he led the Church through famine\, Lombard threats\, and fragile civil order. \nGregory strengthened pastoral administration\, wrote the Pastoral Rule\, promoted liturgical life\, and sent Augustine of Canterbury to evangelize the Anglo-Saxons in 597. He called himself “servant of the servants of God\,” a title still used by popes. His feast honors leadership rooted in humility\, prayer\, mission\, and care for the vulnerable. \nPrayer: Saint Gregory the Great\, pray for Church leaders\, teachers\, missionaries\, and all who serve God’s people. Amen.

SUMMARY:Saint Teresa of Calcutta\, Virgin
DESCRIPTION:Teresa of Calcutta was born Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in 1910 in Skopje\, then part of the Ottoman-influenced Balkans. She joined the Sisters of Loreto\, went to India\, and taught in Calcutta. In 1946\, during a train ride to Darjeeling\, she experienced what she called a “call within a call” to serve the poorest of the poor. \nIn 1950\, she founded the Missionaries of Charity\, whose work among the dying\, abandoned\, and destitute became known worldwide. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and died on September 5\, 1997. Canonized by Pope Francis in 2016\, she remains a modern witness that holiness often begins with seeing Christ in the person the world ignores. \nPrayer: Saint Teresa of Calcutta\, help us love the poor\, serve the forgotten\, and do small things with great love. Amen.

SUMMARY:Saint Peter Claver\, Priest
DESCRIPTION:Peter Claver was born in 1580 in Catalonia\, Spain\, and entered the Society of Jesus. Sent to the Spanish colonial port of Cartagena in present-day Colombia\, he encountered the brutal Atlantic slave trade. Ships arrived carrying enslaved Africans in horrific conditions\, and Claver dedicated his life to serving them physically and spiritually. \nFor roughly four decades\, Peter Claver met slave ships with food\, medicine\, interpreters\, catechesis\, and human dignity\, calling himself “the slave of the slaves forever.” He died in 1654 and was canonized in 1888. His feast is a summons to repentance for the history of slavery and racism and to concrete solidarity with the oppressed. \nPrayer: Saint Peter Claver\, pray for racial justice\, human dignity\, and the courage to serve Christ in the oppressed. Amen.

SUMMARY:The Exaltation of the Holy Cross
DESCRIPTION:The Exaltation of the Holy Cross is linked to the fourth-century discovery tradition of the True Cross by Saint Helena\, mother of Emperor Constantine\, and the dedication of churches built over Calvary and the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem in 335. The feast also recalls the recovery of the relic of the Cross from the Persians by Emperor Heraclius in the seventh century. \nThe Cross\, once an instrument of Roman execution and shame\, became the sign of Christ’s victory over sin and death. Historically\, this feast gathers together Jerusalem\, imperial Christianity\, pilgrimage\, relic devotion\, and the deepest theology of redemption. It calls believers to see suffering through the light of Christ’s self-giving love. \nPrayer: Lord Jesus\, by your Holy Cross\, redeem our suffering and teach us to love with sacrificial courage. Amen.

SUMMARY:Our Lady of Sorrows
DESCRIPTION:Devotion to Mary’s sorrows developed from meditation on Simeon’s prophecy in Luke 2 and Mary’s presence at the Cross in John 19. By the Middle Ages\, Christians reflected on the Seven Sorrows of Mary\, including the flight into Egypt\, the loss of the child Jesus\, the Crucifixion\, and the burial of her Son. \nThe Servite Order\, founded in 13th-century Florence\, helped spread devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows. The memorial\, placed immediately after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross\, teaches that Mary’s suffering is inseparable from her faithful love for Christ. She stands with all who grieve and shows how sorrow can be united to hope. \nPrayer: Our Lady of Sorrows\, stand with us in grief and help us unite our suffering to the Cross of Christ. Amen.
