Formation Program Information

Formation Program for the Permanent Diaconate

The Deacon Formation is a five year program.  Our practice is to begin a new class every four years.  The program consists of one year of Aspirancy followed by four years of Candidate Formation.  The Aspirancy year for the next class is conducted during the same year as the fourth year of Candidate Formation.

The Aspirancy year is a year of discernment both for the man, (and his wife if married) who is discerning a call to the Permanent Diaconate, and for the Diocese.  Through prayer, workshops and evaluations the call to the Permanent Diaconate is tested and examined.   Also during the Aspirancy year the application process is completed including references, background checks, scrutinies, psychological testing etc.

Admission to the Aspirancy year requires completion of the Application Form and related documents, the Wives Questionnaire (if married) and the Pastor’s letter of recommendation.  At the end of the Aspirancy year the Bishop decides if the individual should be called to Candidacy and thus begin the four year Candidate Formation program.  Consult the “Aspirancy Year” document for more information.

The Candidate Formation program consists of an academic/spiritual development component conducted by St. Meinrad School of Theology and a Formation component conducted by the Diocese of Lexington.  Sessions are held on the weekend that begins with the second Friday of the month and meet from September through June each year.  Sessions begin on Friday evening and conclude on Sunday afternoon.  Each year begins with a retreat in August.  For more detailed information consult the "St. Meinrad Program" document and the "Lexington Program" document.
